Online Vehicle Registration Renewal
Once you receive your renewal notice in the mail a few weeks prior to the deadline, you have the option to renew your tag online. This is the simplest, most streamlined way to renew your tag. The State of Texas Department of Motor Vehicles website has a renewal option page. You’ll visit that page to renew your tag, and it’s mentioned on the renewal notice if you prefer not to search for the page.

You’re prompted to enter specific information at each step, and the instructions are easy to follow. You will receive your notice anywhere from six to eight weeks prior to the registration expiration, and it’s important you renew it right away so you get your new tag before your old one expires. An expired tag that’s been renewed but not yet replaced is grounds for a warning or even a ticket.
Once you enter your personal information and vehicle information online, you’ll pay the fee. The fee varies based on the type of vehicle you have, the age of the vehicle, and other factors. You’ll use your credit card to pay the fee, print a confirmation of your transaction, and wait for your new tag to arrive in the mail. You might place the confirmation in your vehicle in case you are pulled over.
Renew by Mail
Once you receive your renewal notice in the mail, you can send it back to the DMV with the required information filled out. The form is ready for you to send back, but you must include a check in the correct amount. The address to send it is listed on the form so you can be certain it’s going to the correct location. Do not forget to include a copy of your liability insurance with the registration. It must be current, and it must meet state standards for minimum insurance requirements. Your new tag is mailed to you when your renewal is processed.
Renew in Person
It’s always an option to go into any local DMV office in Texas to renew your tag. Just like the online application for renewal and the mailed form, you must provide proof of insurance. You must also provide all the other correct information as it’s requested. You will receive your new tag while you’re there, so this is a good option if you waited too long to renew your tag and don’t have the time to wait for a new one to arrive in the mail.
If you want to renew your tagless often, you do have the option to ask for a multi-year tag when you buy a new car. This option is currently only available for those who drive a brand-new car off the lot in Texas. You can ask to have a multi-year policy so you’re not required to renew your tag annually. You can skip a year each time. It’s convenient to do, and it only requires you pay for the second year of registration.
If you do not renew your registration and continue to drive with an expired tag, you could be pulled over, given a warning, and even issued a ticket for the problem. It is illegal to drive on an expired tag, and you don’t want to get caught driving like this. Renew in time, and be sure to replace that tag when your new one arrives.
