The requirements to apply for a new drivers license in Texas are strict. The purpose of this strict law is to ensure only the people who are considered safe and eligible drivers are given a license in this state. If you’re just turning the legal age to drive, if you just moved to the state, or if you’re much older and you never applied for a license, you might find yourself curious as to how you apply. It’s not difficult, but the rules are a little different for everyone.
Teen Drivers and New Licenses
All teen drivers who want to apply for a license must first obtain a learner’s permit. This can be done at the age of 15, and all the requirements are on file with the DMV in Texas. Once a teen driver has a permit, they can apply for a license when they meet the following requirements.
When a driver turns at least 16 but has not reached their 18th birthday, they have issued a provisional license. This license is given to them when they have had their learner’s permit at least six months, when they’ve completed both the driving test and the classroom tests required for a license, when they’ve completed the Impact Texas Teen Driver’s test, and when they have passed a driver’s test. Once they turn 18, their provisional license expires, and they get a traditional license.
They must also bring the following.
- Proof of residency
- Proof of citizenship
- Proof of identity
- Social security number
The DMV provides all new applicants with a driver’s license application, but they also provide this online for anyone who wants to fill it out in advance to save time in the DMV. Many offices also take appointments if you want to call a make one ahead of time.
Applying for A New License When You’re Not A Teen Driver
If you are not a teen driver, you still need to apply for a license. In addition to the same proofs of citizenship, residency, identity, and SSN teen drivers are required to bring to the DMV, older applicants must bring proof of registration for any car they own as well as proof of insurance for each vehicle. If you are younger than 25 and have never had a license in the past, you must take a driver education course and prove you passed. You must also do the following.
- Take and pass a vision exam
- Pay a fee for a license (Varies)
- Provide your thumbprint for reference
- Take a photo
- Take a written exam
- Take a driving exam
If you are a new resident of the state, you might not be required to go through the written or driving exam portion of obtaining a new license. You can use your previous license for up to 90 days once you move into the state. Once you begin the application process, you are legally bound to return your old license to the state. If you’re already licensed to drive in another state, you won’t need to take any of the written or driving exams because you merely transfer your license from that state to Texas. You must still provide the necessary documentation listed above, pay the fee, and wait for your new license.
Furthermore, anyone with a valid military ID is exempt from taking any written or driving tests to obtain a new license in Texas. If you are applying for a new license because yours expired, is lost, or is stolen, there are completely different requirements as none of those situations is considered applying for a new license. You can still go to the DMV to ask how to handle this situation, but you will not need to apply for a new license to get a replacement or renew an expired license.
If you have any court orders or criminal reason for not being able to get a license in another state, you cannot obtain a license in the state. This is illegal, and you will not be granted a new license. The requirements are strict to ensure only those who are legally able to drive are on the road.
